Through whimsical ceramic sculptures and felt tapestries, “Like Any Living Thing” investigates precarity, uncertainty and the emotional landscape of living with debt. The works are inspired by vessels that don’t quite function as expected. From exaggerated handles to disproportionate scales, these sculptures feature forms that suggest utility but fail to deliver. Their surfaces are influenced by the visual language of tabletop games, echoing bureaucratic hoops that debt holders navigate in everyday life.

The show delves into the emotional uncertainty of living with debt—an experience shared by millions in the United States when paying for basic needs such as medical care, housing, and education. Debt is a way of living, one that creates both opportunity and limitation for its holders. The work reflects the complex, precarious balance many of us navigate daily.

At a time of historic wealth inequality, millions of people in the U.S. are forced to accrue debt just to survive, managing loans, payment plans, and the promise of future financial security. For those without access to personal or inherited wealth, debt becomes a critical part of making ends meet, with basic survival and progress often dependent on a delicate and ongoing financial juggling act.

The Artist Talk will provide a deeper look into the artist’s creative process, inspirations, and themes behind the work.

We hope you join us in supporting a local artist at The DRAW Gallery in Midtown Kingston. “Like Any Living Thing” by Madeleine Cutrona will be on view through Saturday, March 1st. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday 1-6pm, Saturdays 12-4pm and by appointment. Admission is free, and all are welcome to view the artwork. We look forward to seeing you there.
